Recovery

At the Surgical Institute of Monroe, it is our goal to ensure that all patients recover as quickly and successfully as possible. Please keep the following recommendations and guidelines in mind for your recovery:

  • It has been well documented that patient recovery is helped by mobility and a return to their comfortable home environment. Therefore, it is our goal to help you return to home as soon as you meet our discharge criteria.
  • We recommend that you have a family member or friend stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Contact your physician's office if you experience any problems or difficulties.
  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours following surgery.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery for 24-48 hours following surgery.
  • Follow your physician's post-operative instructions regarding diet, medications, rest, follow-up appointments, and return to normal activities.
  • Most patients will receive a post-op telephone call from a staff member within a couple of days following the procedure so that we can ensure they are on the road to recovery. Please be sure to leave a number where you can be reached.
  • Contact your physician immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: temperature of 101 or higher and/or chills, nausea and vomiting that lasts more than 24 hours, increased or unusual drowsiness, worsening pain that is not relieved by medications, increased swelling, redness, or discharge around your incision.
  • If, at any time, you feel you need urgent assistance, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.
